Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*SOCIAL GATHERING POT LUCK will be on Tuesday, May 1, from 4 to 6 pm. Dinner choice this month is a roast with baked potatoes, variety of veggies, salad, rolls, tea and coffee. Bring desserts to share. Cost is $5. Call the Center for a reservation.

*GREETING CARD CRAFT is on May 8, 1 pm. Make cards and envelopes “For Our Troops” with a few simple items (almost like scrapbooking).

*MOTHER’S DAY TEA & BINGO on Wednesday, May 9, at 1 pm.

*BINGO: May 9, 16, and 30; all at 1 pm.

*AARP SAFETY DRIVING COURSE will be May 17 and 18, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm, $10 per person.

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*BEGINNER’S BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

*LARRY AYCE is back for song and dance on Tuesday, May 29, at 1 pm.

 

Day Trips

*ITALIAN FEST at Mount Haven Resort, May 11, in the foothills of the Poconos, only an hour and a half by bus. Complete breakfast and dinner buffets and live entertainment of Italian music. Cost per person is $66; bus departs at 8 am.

*Tour The CULINARY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA Thursday, May 31, in Hyde Park, N.Y., enjoy a Northern Italian cuisine at Caterina De Medici, and then onto Millbrook Vineyard in Millbrook, N.Y., for a wine tasting. $82 per person; bus departs at 8 am.

*THE ROCKETTES at Radio City Music Hall on Friday, November 9, with lunch at Rudy’s. Early booking special, $105 per person.

*Visit Broadway and see JERSEY BOYS and have lunch at Oscar’s at the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Wednesday, December 5. Depart the Senior Center at 9:15 am; cost is $193 per person.

 

Overnight Trips

*FUTURE TRIPS include a 3-day trip to Pennsylvania Dutch countryside and visit the King Tut exhibit in Philadelphia, July 25–27; an 8-day tour of Scotland, August 22–30; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise September 3–8. Trip booklets are available at the front desk.

Monday: April 30: Crunchy fish fillet, mashed sweet potatoes, bean & carrot blend, tartar sauce, seedless rye bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: May 1: Chicken parmesan, penne pasta with marinara sauce, chopped spinach, Italian bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Succulent roast pork loin with gravy, mashed potato, diced carrots, applesauce garnish, potato bread, mandarin oranges.

Thursday: Beef barley soup with crackers, mushroom quiche wedge, broccoli and cauliflower mix, whole wheat bread, angel food cake with berries and whipped topping.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: May 7: Pineapple glazed ham, scalloped potatoes, peas and onions, seedless rye bread, orange juice, cling peaches.

Tuesday: Hungarian stuffed cabbage roll, mashed potato, diced carrots, oatmeal bread, chocolate pudding with whipped topping.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts, social gathering Pot Luck.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.
