NMS Celebration Of The Arts May 1

Newtown Middle School’s annual Celebration of the Arts has been set for Tuesday, May 1, from 6 to 8 pm.

Each year artwork created by students throughout the school year is put on demonstration and more. This year, the school’s Technology Education room is set to be open for visitors again, the Computer Tech Club will have presentations for viewing, a slideshow of photos will be shown in the B-Wing gym of Project Adventure, an interactive fitness display will also be held in the B-Wing gym, Family and Consumer Science will offer a “culinary corner” in room B8, and piñatas created by Spanish students will be on display in the school’s lobby.

The school’s acclaimed Opus Optima writing and art journal will also be sold during the night.

The middle school Chamber Orchestra is set to kick off the night’s musical lineup from 6 to 6:20 pm in the school’s auditorium, with student recitals in room D9 slated for 6:25 to 6:35, the school’s Percussion Ensemble will perform in the auditorium from 6:40 to 6:50, ukulele lessons will be offered in room D8 from 6:55 to 7:15, and the NMS Jazz Band will perform in the auditorium from 7:30 to 8.

NMS art teacher Arlene Spoonfeather said the art department hopes to display roughly 1,000 works of art this year, with a focus on the art of using graphite.

The NMS Interact Club is also set to hold its annual bake sale during the event. The bake sale profits, according to Interact Club advisor Bruce Moulthrop, will benefit Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale, No Kid Hungry program, which promotes ending childhood hunger in the United States.

“For the last four years this fundraiser has been a collaborative effort of the students, my wife — who each year has graciously come forth to assist — and me,” said Mr Moulthrop in a letter sent home to Interact Club parents.

This year students will be baking brownies and banana muffin squares for this year’s event, and Mrs Moulthrop will once again break out her scone recipe, which have been a hit at past NMS Interact Club bake sales.

The Interact Club is set to be in the NMS main lobby with its baked goods.
