Softball Team Tops Kolbe, Embarks On Busy Stretch

Newtown High School’s softball team ended a four-game losing streak and three-game scoreless skid with a 10-3 rout of visiting Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on April 18.

Karlie Kuligowski highlighted a six-run third inning and broke open a close game with a bases-loaded triple, turning a 4-3 Newtown advantage into a 7-3 lead with one swing. She finished the game 2-for-2 with a double, sacrifice fly, four runs batted in, and two runs scored.

Dani Shine, also 2-for-2, belted a homerun and scored three runs. Mikayla Kuligowski and Jess Gibbons both drove in runs.

Freshman pitcher Gillian Galante had a solid performance in the circle. She struck out seven batters, allowed seven hits, and did not issue a walk as the Nighthawks improved to 2-5 overall.

The team had a pair of games postponed this past week and was scheduled to visit Oxford on Wednesday (after The Bee sports section went to press) in the first of four games in as many days and five contests in six days.

Newtown was slated to host Weston on Thursday, and will entertain Joel Barlow of Redding on Friday, April 27 at 4:15. The team will visit Notre Dame-Fairfield on Saturday at 1 pm, then go to Danbury for a date with Immaculate on Monday at 4:15 pm.

The Nighthawks return to town for a home game on Wednesday, May 2 when Pomperaug of Southbury visits Treadwell Park for a 7 pm game under the lights.
