IWC Postpones Wetlands Hearing On Railroad Project
IWC Postpones Wetlands Hearing
On Railroad Project
The Inland Wetlands Commission (IWC) has granted the Housatonic Railroad Company a time extension to submit technical information in its application for a wetlands protection permit for its property at 30 Hawleyville Road (Route 25).
The railroad is seeking that permit in connection with its controversial proposal to expand its solid waste handling operations at its rail terminal.
At an April 28 IWC session, IWC Chairman Anne Peters told panel members that the railroad has requested that the public hearing on its application be postponed until the IWCâs May 12 meeting. The hearing had been scheduled to start on April 28.
IWC members agreed to the postponement to May 12 on Ms Petersâ recommendation that such a continuance be granted.
The railroad is seeking that wetlands permit in connection with its controversial proposal to increase the range of solid waste and also expand the tonnage of solid waste that it handles at its terminal.
The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is reviewing the health and safety aspects of the waste expansion proposal. The railroad proposes significantly increasing its transfer of solid waste from heavy trucks onto railcars for shipment by rail for disposal at out-of-state landfills.
The IWC is reviewing only the wetlands protection aspects of the project.
