Let The Community Be Heard
Let The Community Be Heard
To the Editor:
I voted No [on the budget referendum] because I do not support the $2.5 million in cuts to the Board of Education-recommended budget. These cuts mean laying off teachers, increasing class sizes, and cutting some or all after school programs, including scholastic sports.
Not only does this affect our childrenâs welfare but it affects the value of our homes. Families looking for homes in our area will be looking for a community that values education. So, along with our fiduciary responsibility to further our childrenâs education, consider the tax money appropriated for education an investment in our future as a âsought-afterâ community. Let the voice of our community be heard by sending your opinion to Legislative Council member Kevin Fitzgeraldâs email at kevinkis@aol.com. If our elected officials do not abide by âNewtownâs Code of Ethics, Standards of Service, Section 36-2â which states in the Introduction, âOfficials and employees have a special responsibility, by virtue of the trust invested in them by the townâs residents, to discharge their duties conscientiously, impartially, and to the best of their ability, placing the good of the town above any personal or partisan considerations,â then our community has a much bigger problem and it isnât the budget.
