Coach Adams Likes What He Sees As Nighthawks Put Pedal To Medal, Get Back To Winning Ways

After enduring a couple of one-goal setbacks, in which Coach Glenn Adams believed his team did not put in a full four-quarter effort either time, the Nighthawks played eight straight solid quarters in a pair of lopsided wins to get back on track.
Sure the competition â Stratford and Masuk of Monroe â was not the same as Conard and Weston, the only teams to beat Newtown in seven games, but a through effort is a thorough effort. Newtown defeated Stratford 16-1 on the road on April 23 and toppled visiting Masuk 21-6 under a steady rain at Treadwell Park on April 26.
Newtown built a 10-0 halftime lead on Stratford and carried a commanding 15-4 cushion into the break against Masuk and cruised through the second half of each of those wins.
Against Masuk, Tim Dalton scored five goals, Justin Brophy netted a three-goal hat-trick, and Colby Summerlin, Will Northrop, Trey Trudell, Ryan Korth, and Zach Dent all scored twice.
Lewis Thompson had a goal and four assists â marking the second straight game in which he has played the role of playmaker to the tune of four setups.
âIt was definitely a pick-me-up that our team needed,â Dalton said. âI think we definitely played four quarters today.â
The Nighthawks controlled 15 of 25 face-offs and Summerlin, Dan Hebert, and Dylan Huebner all scooped five ground balls to help the Nighthawks maintain possession throughout much of the afternoon.
âWe played our game â won the ground ball battles, played solid defense, and on offense we were patient with the ball, didnât have a lot of turnovers on offense,â Adams said after the win over Masuk.
âI think today was kind of a turning point for us. We got back to playing our game and we did it for a full, basically, 48 minutes,â Adams added. âAnd thatâs our goal â thatâs what we wanted to do and basically, from now on out, weâre going to use this as a turning point to build on every single day.â
Newtown, following Wednesdayâs scheduled game at New Milford (after The Bee sports section went to press) will return home in early May for scheduled games with Brookfield and Old Lyme in back-to-back contests at Blue & Gold Stadium. The Brookfield game is tentatively scheduled for May 3 at 7 pm and Old Lyme visits for a non-conference battle on May 5 at 6 pm.
