Send A Message To The Council
To the Editor:
Each year my wife and I typically vote Yes to approve the budget, trusting that our elected officials are proposing a budget thatâs ârightâ for the town. We have often voted Yes because of fear that a No vote will lead to more cuts. I have even been unemployed during a couple of previous budget cycles and continued to vote Yes because it was in our best interest to maintain the integrity of the school system. However this year we voted No because we cannot support a budget that continues to dismantle the education system in town and will lead to a further erosion of property values.
Just because theyâve done it year after year doesnât mean the Board of Ed can reduce the budget again without cuts to teaching positions. Thereâs not much left. Weâve already cut the programs and services that made Newtown schools special. The BOE needs to do a much better job of communicating this. We also need to know what, if any, concessions the teachers and administrators have made to keep the budget in check.
The message hasnât gotten through that Newtown schools have historically gotten a much better bang for the buck versus other towns. But you can only stretch that dollar so far and it will break. If you agree the budget should be increased, now is your time to be heard. Send a message to the Legislative Council. Add funds back to the Board of Education budget.
