Third Annual Candlewood Valley Trout Unlimited Youth Education Day
Third Annual Candlewood Valley Trout
Unlimited Youth Education Day
NEW MILFORD â The Candlewood Valley chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU) will host its third annual Youth Education Day on Saturday, May 8, beginning at 8:30 am. The event will take place at Pratt Nature Center, along the banks of the East Aspetuck River at 163 Papermill Road (off Route 7).
The event is open to ages 8â18 and their parents, and registration is required.
Volunteer members of the chapter, as well as friends from the community, will teach children the basics of fishing for trout with a fly rod, will explore the streambed to understand the food chain of the special habitat, and will get to try their hand at tying a fly.
âFor several years, the chapter has been active in helping to restore trout habitat as well as educate students through our Trout in The Classroom programs in New Milford, Newtown, and nearby towns,â said Adam Taylor, president of the Candlewood Valley chapter. âIt feels natural for us to extend our activities to help a new generation develop a love for the sport of fly fishing.â
âIn todayâs fast paced world, itâs hard to find time to teach our children about the outdoor and sports like fishing,â said Newtown resident Steve Zakur, who is a member of the TU chapter board and an organizer of the event. âWe hope that this event will jumpstart the skills needed to provide parents and children with a lifelong appreciation of fishing and trout habitat.â
Registration is $20. Those interested in additional information or registration can visit CVTU.org or call Mr Zakur at 203-364-1336.
