Two Paths Forward On The Budget
Two Paths Forward On The Budget
To the Editor:
Seventy-nine percent of the voters have not spoken. Lots of voters are conflicted â especially education supporters.
The key to referendum success is to get voters to change their votes, and to show up. Iâm convinced that the No voters who want a smaller budget will never be satisfied by a modest decrease, so the only viable way forward is to rally education supporters to vote Yes. Further cuts wonât do that. I see only two paths forward.
1) The Legislative Council could make modest cuts in both the education and town budgets. A modest cut wonât satisfy those No voters that want to see the budget cut further â theyâll still vote No. Education supporters will vote No in larger numbers (Iâll be one of those who switches from Yes to No). This vote will fail by a much larger margin. The good news: the will of the people will be more obvious â increase the education budget. But it will take three referenda to get there.
2) The Legislative Council could think out of the box. They could make modest cuts on the town side, and move it to education â a modest increase for education. This will switch a lot of education supporters who voted No to vote Yes, and it will rally education supporters who felt their vote didnât matter to show up and vote Yes. The second referendum will pass.
Regardless, Newtowners need to get involved, and vote!
