Final Save-As-You-Throw Information Session Saturday
A final session briefing the public on the changes coming to the Newtown Transfer Station on July 1 is planned for Saturday, May 3, beginning at 10 am, at Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street. The event is open to all residents; senior center membership is not required.
As this paper has covered for nearly a year, the transfer station will implement a new save-as-you-throw (SAYT) program this summer that will waive permit fees while requiring the use of Town-branded blue bags for trash.
Saturday's information session is the final planned public opportunity for residents to learn about the new program and have accurate information regarding the changes. Previous sessions have been conducted on March 26 and April 1 at Newtown Community Center, and April 24 at the senior center.
Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority Executive Director Jennifer Heaton-Jones will lead the May 3 session, with members from the Town’s Recycling Ad Hoc Committee also planning to attend. There will be a Q&A segment at the end of the session, when attendees have a chance to ask questions about recycling in Newtown as well as SAYT.
Heaton-Jones told The Newtown Bee this week there will be more information added "in the near future" to HRRA’s website (hrra.org) regarding the SAYT program. Additional information is also available by visiting newtownbee.com and searching for SAYT and/or HRRA to find related stories.
