Will Speak At Roxbury Library
ROXBURY â On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Gulf War and in recognition of Armed Forces Day, Minor Memorial Library will host a presentation by Gulf War veteran and author Sherman Baldwin. Mr Baldwin will be at the library on Saturday, May 19, at 11 am, as part of its âSaturday at the Libraryâ series of lectures. His talk is titled âTen Years after The Gulf War: The Importance of Strengthening the US Military.â
Mr Baldwin served in the US Navy from 1987 to 1995 as a carrier pilot and in other positions including that of Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy. He was assigned to Air Wing Fiveâs EA-6B Prowler squadron, call sign Ironclaw, aboard the USS Midway during the Gulf War in 1991.
Flying the Prowler attack aircraft, Mr Baldwin, his crew and three flight officers and the rest of their squadron were responsible for identifying, jamming and destroying enemy radar. His Gulf War experiences as a navy carrierâs pilot were documented in his highly acclaimed book Ironclaw, published in 1996.
âSherman Baldwin is a superb writer whose descriptions of flying high-performance jets off the carrier Midway in the Gulf War bring the reader right into the cockpit. Authentic, top-notch stuff,â said Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale.
Born in New Canaan, Mr Baldwin grew up in Roxbury, where his mother still resides. A graduate of Yale University and Harvard Business School, he is currently managing director of the New York regional office of Redleaf Group, Inc. and lives with his family in Darien, CT.
