Newtown High School Football Youth Camp
The Newtown High School football team will be sponsoring its annual youth camp at Hawley School in July and August. The full-contact camp for players in grades 3 through 8 will run from Monday, July 30, through Friday, August 3, 9 am to 12 noon each day. The camp will be run by Newtown High School head coach Steve George with the aid of assistant coaches and current players. Frank Durante Memorial Golf Tournament
The first annual Frank Durante Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Newtown High School football team, will be held Tuesday, August 14, at Oxford Greens in Oxford. Tee-off will be at 7:30 am. Softball Travel Team Tryouts
Newtown Babe Ruth Softball will be holding tryouts for summer league travel on Sunday, May 6, and Sunday, June 3, at the Newtown Middle School. Any girl registered with Babe Ruth Softball is eligible to try out at the U10, U12, U14 and U16 levels. You must attend tryouts to be eligible for the team. U10 and U12 players will tryout on May 6 (U10s from 3 to 5 pm and U12s from 5 to 7 pm). U14 and U16 players will tryout on June 3 from 1 to 3 pm. The season will run from May 14 through August 5 for U10 and U12 levels while the U14 and U16 level will begin after their tryout date and run until August 5. Weeknite Slo-Pitch Softball
The Newtown Menâs Weeknight Softball League will begin play in mid May. All team managers, old and new, and all new players should contact Chris Dennis at 203-770-1824 before May 10.
Governorâs Cup All-Star Football Game
Senior Kevin Regan, an All-State defensive end, and senior Leah Fahey, an All-State cheerleader, will represent Newtown High School at the Governorâs Cup All Star football game on Thursday, June 28, at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. The game pits teams from Connecticut and Rhode Island and benefits charitable interests, such as the Dave Campo Foundation for vision screening and eyeglasses for inner city youth. There will be a Youth Football Clinic at 1:30 pm and a Cheerleading Clinic at 3:30 pm. Visit www.cthssports.com to register for either clinic (free with the purchase of a game ticket). Nighthawks Sports Camps
Wacky Water days, t-shirts, weekly Olympics and awards â there is all that, and more, planned for this summer when the Nighthawks Sports Camps returns to Newtown. NSC offers advanced and challenging instruction and activities involving all sports skills to students in grades one through six. The program will run for two, two-week sessions and will be facilitated by certified physical education instructors, providing a wide range of skill developing games and activities. Session A will meet from July 2-6 and 9-13 (exluding July 4) while Session B will run from July 16-20 and 23-27. Lunch will be provided each day. All sessions will be held at Head Oâ Meadow Elementary School. Cost is $199 per session or $299 for both (discount rate not valid after June 1). Dave And Gregâs Tennis
Dave and Gregâs Tennis will be providing several new tennis options this summer. There will be two sessions of match play, a program option geared to juniors aged 9 to 11 and 12 through 16 who are able to get their serve in consistently. Juniors will be given strategy tips from a certified adult instructor while playing matches. Additionally, there will be two afternoon camps this summer and two morning camps. As in previous years, Dave and Gregâs Tennis will offer clinics for seven weeks (three, two-week long sessions and a one-week long session) starting June 25. This includes lessons for tiny tots (ages 4-7), beginners (grades 2-4), beginners (grades 5-10), and intermediate/advanced players (grades 5-10). Also new this year are adult clinics starting June 25 at Newtown High School. There will be two, four-week sessions for adult beginner and intermediate levels. Raccoon 5K
The Raccoon 5K, Fun Run & Walk will be held Saturday, May 26, at Redding Elementary School. The 5K and Fun Run will start at 8:45 am while the kids (12 and under) one-mile fun run will start at 8 am. Fees are $20 for the 5K ($25 after May 18) and $10 for the one-mile fun run ($15 after May 18). Maximum is $50 per family. There will be t-shirts for all pre-registered participants and t-shirts for race day registrants as supplies last.Running shoes will be presented to first male and female runners, courtesy of KILOMETERS. Namath/Dockery Football Camp
The Joe Namath/John Dockery Football Camp will open its 36th season July 8 through July 13 at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury. This is a contact and non-contact program for boys ages 8 to 18.
