NHS Laxmen Continue To Play Close Games

By Andy Hutchison

Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team won two of three games this past week, defeating South-West Conference rivals Brookfield and New Milford, and falling just short against nonconference opponent Glastonbury.

All three games were close as the Nighthawks defeated Brookfield 10-8 at Treadwell Park on April 26, fell 8-7 at Glastonbury on Saturday, and edged host New Milford 9-8 on Tuesday. These nail-biters gave the Hawks four straight games decided by two goals or less, following a 9-7 win at St Joseph in Trumbull on April 23. Newtown improved to 9-2 overall, and seven of the 11 games have been one- or two-goal battles, with NHS coming out on top in all but one — that nail-biting defeat to Glastonbury.

In the win over Brookfield, the Nighthawks spread the wealth offensively with eight Newtowners accounting for the ten net-finders. Dan Hebert and Jake Ball both scored twice. Hebert also had a pair of assists for a four-point night, and Justin Brophy and Trey Trudell both contributed a goal and two assists in the win. Brendan McNamara and Justin Spath combined to field ten of the team’s 23 ground ball pickups. Goaltender Evan Isaacs made seven saves.

Against Glastonbury, Brophy scored a hat-trick, and Trudell found the back of the net twice. Hebert led the way in the assist category with four helpers. McNamara found his way to ten ground ball pickups, Cory Fisher recorded eight grounders, and Doug Miller scooped five of the team’s 33 pickups.

The Nighthawks led New Milford just 2-1 at halftime before both offenses took charge in the second half of Newtown’s 9-8 victory on Tuesday. A trio of Hawks recorded three points as McNamara led the way with a three-goal effort, and Trudell and Hebert both notched two goals and an assist. Will Fletcher had four of the team’s 29 ground balls. None of the Hawks had more, and five Newtown players scooped three balls. Isaacs came up with 13 saves in the win.

Newtown was scheduled to go to Monroe to take on Masuk on Thursday (after The Bee went to press) and will return home when nonconference foe East Lyme visits Blue & Gold Stadium on Saturday, May 5 for a 7 pm game.
