Phobias And Music

To The Editor:

The Newtown Choral Society played to an enthusiastic crowd as they presented their spring concert, Phobias, The Music, last Saturday at Newtown Meeting House.

Embellishing on our favorite phobias through music, our director, Mary Andreotta, directed the group in a survey of popular music from Shakespeare to Sondheim, including Paul Simon, Loggins & Messina and Abba. Susan Anthony-Klein, our accompanist, supported the choir with her usual professionalism and zeal, and accompanied the choir on clarinet, as well as piano. Later, she and her student Christina Inzero impressed with two four-handed pieces by Georges Bizet.

We would like to thank The Newtown Bee for their support, but especially Nancy Crevier, who kept our name before the public.

We thank our ticket taker, Richard Andreotta, and Monster Marketing in Bethel whose expertise produced an outstanding program. We gathered at the gracious home of Charles and Deborra Zukowski for our after-concert viewing of a recording of the event done so nicely by Charles. We also thank Clive Beddoe-Stephens and Chuck Magoulas who moved our musical equipment and Jacob Hulinska, who came to see his mom sing and stayed to help.

The choir would especially like to thank Nancy Dvorin for creating our page on Facebook and establishing our presence on Newtown Patch.  And it was terrific to see John McMahon return as narrator.

Finally, we must thank my husband, Kenneth. As usual, Kenneth lent his computer expertise, his patience, and his muscle wherever it was needed.

The Newtown Choral Society, which is in its 25th year, will begin rehearsals for its December 1 concert in September. Under the direction of Mary Andreotta, we are a community choir and welcome new members from all area towns and have openings in all voices. We perform two concerts a year, sing at local events and weddings and practice Wednesday evenings at the Newtown Middle School.
