Great Pootatuck Duck Race Is In The Works

Why are many Newtowners marking May 27 in red on their calendars? Why are people setting aside the hours between 10 am and 2 pm on the busy family-oriented Memorial Day weekend?

The reason is simple: The Sixth Annual Great Pootatuck Duck Race will be held in Mike Porco’s spacious area off Glen Road on that day and during those times.

Chairman Matt DeAngelis assures townsfolk that this will be the best duck race ever with magicians, face painters, musicians, singers and dancers either performing or working the crowds. There will also be a number of children’s games including a Moon Bounce as well as many community booths of volunteer organizations in town.

And the prizes… There are twice as many prizes as last year including a Cub Cadet tractor for first prize, a weekend in New York with hotel, dinner and theater tickets (second prize), and an X-Box game cub (third prize).

Other prizes include a Betty Christiansen print, a family pool pass from Parks and Rec, ten movie passes to Edmond Town Hall, a two-year subscription to The Newtown Bee, a month of lessons at Newtown Karate, a Krups II Caffe Duomo Coffee/Espresso Maker, and a 25-inch television.

In addition there are gift certificates from Ricci’s, Mona Lisa, Villa, The Inn at Newtown, Video Movie Corner, Newtown Car Care, The Gym at Newtown, Style, Newtown Computer, Shell (gas card), Avancé Esthétiques, Sal e Pepe, Red Brick Tavern, Subway, Lexington Gardens, El Coyote, Tre Ragazze, Villarina’s (gift basket), Newtown Color Center, The Toy Tree, George’s Restaurant, Firehouse Restaurant, Clock Shop, Hollandia, Bethel Tan and Body, Newtown Pizza Palace, Bagel Delight, Ritz Camera, and Newtown Nails.

Additional prizes may be forthcoming.

Tickets are available at Drug Center, C.H. Booth Library, The Toy Tree, Sandy Hook Wine & Spirits, Yankee Spirits, Porco’s Karate, and Coach’s Deli among other places.

According to Mr DeAngelis, “We have a record number or prizes – 59 – a great cause in that all the profits will go toward a new dog pound and a limited number of tickets so I’m actually worried that we are going to run out of tickets. It is a good feeling to have.”
