SEYMOUR 8, NEWTOWN 7: Ashley Ferris had a pair of hits while Lisa Morgan, Emily Nezvesky, Megan LaFlamme, Emily Blewett and Courtney Brunton all collected hits, but the Lady Lions fell to Seymour to open the 2001 Newtown Middle School softball season.

Seymour took a 3-0 lead after three innings and were up 7-1 after five innings before the Lady Lions scored six times in the top of the sixth inning. Brunton, Morgan and LaFlamme all singled and Ferris added a grand slam homer to cap the inning.

Morgan piled up 11 strikeouts for Newtown.

BETHEL 5, NEWTOWN 3: Despite a dominating pitching performance by Lisa Morgan (18 strikeouts), the Lady Lions – who had the bases loaded in the seventh inning – dropped to 0-2 with a loss to Bethel. Morgan helped herself at the plate, too, going 2-for-3 with a single and a home run into the parking lot.

Ashley Ferris tripled and Megan LaFlamme singled for Newtown’s other two hits.

SCHAGHTICOKE 13, NEWTOWN 7: Ashley Ferris doubled and homered and Annie Grills banged out a pair of singles, but the Lady Lions fell to Schaghticoke Middle School of New Milford. Emily Nezvesky and Kayla Koschel doubled for the Lady Lions while Sarah Holroyd, Caitlin Thursland, and Christie Caruso singled.

Newtown fell to 0-3.

NEWTOWN 23, JOCKEY HOLLOW 6: Fourteen different players got at least one hit and the Lady Lions put together a 23-hit attack to blast Jockey Hollow, 23-6, for their first win of the season. Lisa Morgan was 4-for-4 with two singles, two home runs, and five runs scored and then whiffed six batters in three innings of work on the mound to lead the way.

Ashley Ferris was 3-for-3 with a pair of singles and a home run. Megan LaFlamme, Christie Caruso, and Courtney Brunton had two hits apiece while Caitlin Thursland, Emily Nezvesky, Annie Grills, Emily Blewett, Valerie Nezvesky, Stephanie Henss, Sarah Holroyd, Jenna Van Waalwijk and Kayla Koschel all had hits.

NEWTOWN 19, ROGERS PARK 11: The bats remained hot and the Lady Lions moved to 2-3 on the season with a 19-11 win over Rogers Park. Lauren Cascia singled twice and cracked a grand slam home run to fuel a opportunistic, 11-hit attack.

Ashley Ferris doubled and homered and Lisa Morgan homered to fuel the offense. The Lady Lions took advantage of 10 bases on balls and tossed in a double by Christina Wolf and singles by Valerie Nezvesky, Emily Blewett, Jenna Van Waalwijk, and Christie Caruso to edge Rogers Park.
