Summer Wise-Math & Science Camp For Girls At Westover

MIDDLEBURY — Parents of girls in sixth, seventh or eighth grades who are looking for an exciting, challenging and enjoyable computer, math and science summer program may want to consider Summer Wise Camp 2001. Modeled after its ongoing college level Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program, Westover School offers a similar experience to middle school girls through its Summer WISE Camp.

Summer WISE Camp 2001 will take place at Westover School in Middlebury, and will offer two one-week sessions, July 8 through 12 and July 15 through 19. Campers will live in the school dorms.

Summer WISE Camp combines classroom learning with field trips and offers recreational activities as well as evening entertainment. During past camps, girls have built and launched water rockets, designed Web pages, conducted biology and environmental experiments, rebuilt a computer, and performed math experiments with a TI-92 graphing calculator.

Guest speakers have included professional women from organizations such as Pratt & Whitney and Connecticut Girls and Technology Network. Afternoon and evening activities have included Brazilian and African dance, swimming, sports, international mask making, and a talent show production.

This year, among other activities, students will invent a product and design a commercial for it.

To learn more about Summer WISE at Westover School, contact Carol Santos, director of Summer WISE, by calling 203-577-4503, or by emailing her at csantos@westoverschool.org. The deadline for applying to the camp is June 15.
