Occupation: I am resident services coordinator at The Homesteads at Newtown. I was with the original group when we opened three years ago in March. Before that, I was with Bethel Healthcare. I received my bachelor of science degree in recreation and leisure studies from Southern Connecticut State College in New Haven with an emphasis on commercial recreation.
I did an internship at the Virginia Slim-Lite Tennis Open working with Chris Evert. Then I interned at the Polo Club at Boca Raton, working with older clientele. That was what convinced me I wanted to go into that field. After that, I came to the Pavilion in Danbury.
How Long In Newtown: I live in Woodbury, but I have worked in Newtown over three years.
Biggest Change You Have Seen In Town: Of course, I would have to say development and the housing boom. The sizes of the new homes here are amazing. They seem way out of scale for New England. It is kind of sad to see.
Family: I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin, and have Indian heritage from the Iroquois and Abenaki tribes. One of my ancestors was a relative of Pocahontas. I love to bow hunt and fish. I sometimes think that comes from my Indian heritage.
My wife Kelly is from Bethel. She is a CNA at Ashlar of Newtown. Her father, Jack Dunleavy, owns the Dodgingtown Garage and Citgo Station on Route 302. He and I enjoy hunting together. Her mother, Nancy Dunleavy, watches our children twice a week for which we are very grateful.
We have a daughter, Amber, 7, in the first grade, and a son, Evan, almost 3. We call him âRevvinâ Evanâ because he never stops going. Heâs a very busy boy.
Hobbies: I love gardening and am most comfortable when Iâm out in the woods. I feel a real connection there, possibly because of my Indian heritage. I enjoy riding four-wheelers or ATVs, but Connecticut has no real trail system for that.
Other favorite hobbies are woodworking and running. My older brother got me into running, and I ran cross-country and track for New Milford High School. In college, I was on the traveling team my freshman year. Out of college, I got into running marathons. I always wanted to go farther and faster. My best memory was running in the 1991 New York City Marathon. Out of 27,000 who started, 25,628 finished. I was number 2,252 with a time of 3 hours, 13 minutes, and 54 seconds. Thatâs a little over a seven-minute mile.
Pets: We used to raise hand-fed turkeys for the family. That was fun and we might start it up again.
Favorite TV Show, Movie, Book: I enjoy reading hunting and fishing magazines. My wife and I like to get a babysitter and go to a movie together now and then.
Organizations: Iâm a member of the National Rifle Association.
Most Vivid Memory About Newtown: I have happy memories of seeing the community come out to support our Antique Car Shows and Summer Concerts [at the Homesteads]. These activities provide a nice outlet for local people to enjoy themselves. They also come out for our monthly dances.
Favorite Vacation Spot: My family all live in Florida, so we go there to visit them. I also like going to Jackman, Maine, to a hunting camp with my father-in-law.
Personal Philosophy: My running has made me a very disciplined person. Itâs been a positive influence in my life. I always strive to do better for myself, and to help other people around me. In my job, I canât have down days ââ so I donât.
