Elizabeth Lynch is in charge of the second womenâs tennis event â which will be held tonight (Friday, May 11) from 6:30 to 8 pm at Dickinson Park. The first womenâs event of the year was March 30 and was such a success that this week is an encore event.
Liz is trying to get more of the women on the court.
She grew up in Danbury and graduated from Immaculate High School in 1981 and from Western Connecticut State University in 1985. Her father was an athlete and belonged to the Ridgewood Country Club, where she took tennis lessons when she was nine or 10.
Liz played recreational tennis until she met her husband, Michael, who is also a native of Danbury. They married in 1988 and moved to Newtown in 1991. Liz was working then in Shelton and tennis took a back seat until about six years ago when she came out to the Newtown Tennis Associationâs sandlot tennis at Dickinson Park and joined the Newcomers Club.
She did a survey to see how many women might be interested in tennis and from that organized about 40 women into teams to play round robin tournaments early in the evening. That happened two years ago, so this yearâs evenings of tennis is an extension of Lizâs earlier attempts to get more women playing in a social and relaxed atmosphere.
Liz and Mike have three children â Daniel, Jessica and Sarah. Liz also likes to ski and do aerobics.
