The Newtown High School girls’ track team ran into a couple of pretty tough opponents on Tuesday afternoon – Stratford and Bethel – and even great performances by Whitney Blanchard, Alison Frobey and Britney Rayzor couldn’t stop the Nighthawks from suffering a pair of losses.

The ‘Hawks fell to Bethel (84.5-56.5) and Stratford (73-68), but did record a win over Immaculate (119-2), and saw their record take a little slip to 6-6.

Blanchard had a really nice day for the ‘Hawks, taking first in the shot put with a toss of 29.2 feet and the discus with a throw of 95.0 feet. She also finished second in the javelin with a throw of  89-1 feet – well behind Kaylor of Bethel, with a tremendous throw of 121-6 feet.

Frobey, meanwhile, was first in the 800 meters at 2:33 and Rayzor continued her domination in the 3,200 meters with a first-place finish of 12:28 (eight seconds ahead of her nearest challenger). Frobey also finished second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and Rayzor was second in the 1,600 meters (less than 2/10ths of a second off Dobson of Bethel).

The ‘Hawks also captured first in the 4x800 relay with a mark of 10:37 – 10 seconds ahead of second-place Bethel.

Newtown will wrap up the regular season next Tuesday with a home meet against Notre Dame, Jonathan Law and Pomperaug. The South-West Conference championship meet will be held on Tuesday, May 22, at Jonathan Law, starting at 4:30 pm.
