BETHEL â They never really thought it could happen . . . but they were hoping it would anyway.
Finishing the season undefeated â while only a pipe dream at the beginning of the season â became more and more plausible after the Newtown High School boysâ track team started the season at 7-0-1. But when the Nighthawks got on the bus on Monday afternoon to go face Bethel, Immaculate and Stratford, they knew they were facing their toughest challenge of the 2001 season.
Stratford.
And the Red Devils put the dream of an undefeated season to rest when they handed the Nighthawks a convincing 88.5-61.5 loss.
âIâd be lying if I said I wasnât disappointed about losing to Stratford,â said coach Ed Obloj. âBut Iâm extremely proud of what we accomplished today. We have bigger things to accomplish in the weeks ahead, so Iâm very excited about that.â
Even with the loss, the âHawks moved to 9-1-1 on the year with an 85-64 win over Bethel and 121.5-19.5 win over Immaculate. That sets the stage for next weekâs quad meet against Notre Dame, Jonathan Law and Pomperaug.
âRunning the table in the SWCs is a rarity,â said coach Carl Paternoster, âbut to have had a little taste of what it could be like, we really wanted to run it. But Iâm so happy where weâre at . . . and also the fact that we have an excellent opportunity to get that âPomperaugâ thing off our backs once and for all.â
Kyle Tobin â as the script has pretty much gone this season â was a double winner in the 110 high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles. Dave Strong captured a first in the pole vault and Matt Regan took a first in the shot put for Newtownâs only other first-place finishes.
The 4x800 relay foursome of Dan Phillips, Cuyler Bryant, Jeff Heller and Dave Rod was first by more than 10 seconds over Bethel and 66 seconds over Stratford. Both Rod and Dan Maxwell qualified for the SWC meet with their effort in the 800 meters.
And the SWC meet will be held Monday, May 21, at New Milford, starting at 4:30 pm.
Newtown 85, Bethel 64
Newtown 121.5, IHS 19.5
