Michael J.        Cardone

Michael James Cardone, MD, 88, of Fairfield, died peacefully in his home on May 10. He was predeceased by one year by his beloved wife, Betty Jane (Hull) Cardone.

He was the father of Patricia Lynch of Newtown.

Dr Cardone was born in Bridgeport, son of Assunta and Pasquale Cardone. A graduate of Central High School, he received his medical degree from the University of Vermont. He completed his residency in general practice at St Vincent’s Hospital, Bridgeport, and later in obstetrics at Bellevue Hospital in New York. He practiced in Bridgeport for 45 years, serving on the staff of St Vincent’s Hospital, including a term as president of staff. After retiring from private practice, he continued serving his patients at the newly founded St Vincent’s Medical Center Family Health Center. Additionally, he was a medical director at St Joseph’s Manor in Trumbull.

Dr Cardone was a decorated veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps commanding a mobile medical unit in North Africa and Europe. He rose to the rank of Major and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, Dr Cardone returned to the area to begin his practice and raise nine children. He enjoyed performing as a jazz saxophone player in the Doctors Band.

He is survived by eight other children: Susanne Buckley of New Milford, Cathryn Morrison Lebish of Westport, Mary Lynn Rose of Monroe, Betsy Lincoln of Fairfield, Michele Cardone of Fairfield, Dr Michael Cardone of Boston, James Cardone of Virginia, and Maria McGeady of Maryland; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on May 14, at Our Lady of Assumption Church, 545 Stratfield Road, Fairfield. Interment followed in St Michael Cemetery, Stratford.

The Spear Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield, was in charge of arrangements.
