A Day of Silence
About Expression
The Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at Newtown High School participated in a Day of Silence. The day, promoted by GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network), is meant to shed light on the fact that people of alternate sexual orientation have no way to express themselves in our society without fear of reprisal.
One hundred seven high school students, the highest number of participants so far, wore T-shirts and rainbow ribbons as identification and did not speak for the entire day, from 7:30 am until 2 pm. Students carried cards that explained what they were doing.
At 2 pm, the 107 participants gathered in their usual meeting room and screamed to break the silence. They then discussed things they experienced throughout the day.
Students were pleased with the support the entire staff gave them during the event. If some students were persistent in trying to make a participant talk, a teacher would step in to support that person and reiterate the purpose.
Kristen Gelderman, GSAâs advisor, stated, âDiversity Day and Day of Silence help create a more respectful, kind and safe environment for all students.â
