Local Businesses Are Stepping To Make Women’s Center Fundraiser A Success

RIDGEFIELD — Michael Sorrentino, owner of Newtown Hardware, was happy to help a volunteer from the Women’s Center of Greater Danbury fill a cart with gardening tools and supplies for an auction benefiting Women’s Center programs.

“I feel strongly about this,” Mr Sorrentino said.  “It’s heart-breaking to see women and children in abusive situations, so I’m glad the Women’s Center is there to help.”

Mr Sorrentino is one of several Newtown merchants – not to mention merchants across the region – supporting the Women’s Center event “Shelter from the Storm,” to be held Friday, May 19, at Lounsbury House in Ridgefield. Money raised from the special evening will benefit the many women, men, and children who are served by the center, which covers 14 towns from Ridgefield to Bridgewater.

Individuals and businesses from throughout these towns have generously donated the goods and services that will be offered for sale at silent and live auctions at the event. From gift baskets to trips to exquisite jewelry, those attending will be sure to find something they can’t resist. A lucky raffle winner will go home with tickets to an all-inclusive trip for two to Cancun.

Additional donations for the auctions have been received from Daniel Ricco, of Ricci’s Salon and Spa in Newtown; Tom Johnson/Lexington Gardens in Newtown; Sal e Pepe Restaurant of Newtown; Lisa Whitmore/UK Gourmet of Newtown; Barbara Chappuis/Newport RI Getaway in New Milford; Forestquilter, New Milford; Jim Barbarie’s Restaurant, Danbury; Stew Leonard’s, Danbury; Kristen Jensen Photography, Bethel; Terri Tibbatts Calligraphy, Washington Depot; and Il Compare Restaurant, Wingdale, N.Y.

Guests will enjoy an array of wines provided by Liberta’s Spirit Shoppe of Ridgefield, “dinner by the bite” catered by Tom Devine of Ciao Cafe and Two Steps Downtown Grille, and dessert provided by The Goodie Shoppe of New Fairfield.

Tickets to the event are $75 and reservations are strongly suggested. For more information, visit the center’s website, WomensCenterOfGreaterDanbury.or or call 731-5200.

The Women’s Center of Greater Danbury provides free and confidential services to prevent or lessen the trauma associated with domestic violence, sexual assault and other major life transitions to thousands of women, children and men annually. The programs of the Women’s Center are supported by state and local government, area United Way agencies and the people and businesses in the communities of Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Danbury, Kent, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield, Roxbury, Sherman, Warren and Washington.
