License Plate Benefits
Animal Control
To the Editor:
Recently, Governor Rowland unveiled the new âCaring for Petsâ commemorative license plate. Proceeds from the sale of each plate will benefit the stateâs Department of Agricultureâs Animal Population Control Program (APCP).
This state program helps to provide vaccinations/sterilization benefits for any Connecticut resident who adopts a pet from a municipal pound.
Some good reasons for purchasing this plate:
1. Over 20,000 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens end up in Connecticut pounds each year (10 million nationwide), either lost, abandoned or just unwanted.
2. Municipalities spend thousands of dollars to address the problem of unwanted and stray animals every year. Significant resources are spent rescuing, feeding, and caring for pets in hopes of reuniting them with their owners or adopting them to a new and loving family.
3. 67,000 dogs can result from one unspayed female dog in six years.
4. 420,000 cats can result from one unspayed cat in seven years.
5. Spaying (female) helps to eliminate chances of uterine infections and mammary cancer.
6. Neutering (male) helps to eliminate aggression and the urge to roam.
7. In the past three years, the APCP has provided benefits to over 10,000 pound pets and their new families.
