‘New Works’ At Beaux Arts Gallery

WOODBURY — “Still Life: New Works by Robert Holden and Suzy Taylor” will be on view at Beaux Arts Gallery from May 21 through July 7. An opening reception will be celebrated on Saturday, May 26, from 4 to 6 pm. The gallery is at 16 Sherman Hill Road; telephone 203-263-3939.

“New Works” is an exhibit in contrasts. Robert Holden has a realist vision of still-life, while Suzy Taylor prefers the impressionistic viewpoint. Both artists are inspired by the play of light as well the shapes and color of fruit and flowers.

Mr Holden defines his subjects within the shallow space of his studio, which has light from a small north window supplemented by an overhead lamp. He has an eye for important details as well as an ability to render texture and condition well.

Ms Taylor paints in a studio with many windows. She reveals the wonder of her subjects through letting colors play off each other. The colors are lush and vibrant.

Ms Taylor creates a dynamic by using saturated color and weaving diagonals into the composition. The detail is rendered loosely but discerned nonetheless. Ms Taylor sometimes relieves the interior space by giving viewers a glimpse of the outdoors through a nearby window.

Both artists paint what they see. Each develops a specific drama of light and dark, color and form, detail and impression, to draw viewers into their world.

Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm; and Sunday, 11 am to 4:30 pm.
