The Save Fairfield Hills for Newtown committee is very pleased that First Selectman Herb Rosenthal has embraced our original tenets for the purchase and use of Fairfield Hills. We do want to clarify that our vision for this property continues to be a legacy for future generations, and we remain committed to work on an affordable, prioritized, and phased plan that focuses on keeping Fairfield Hills as a community center for the people of Newtown and not a commercially developed site.

Our priorities for Fairfield Hills remain as follows:

Open space with hiking trails, picnic areas, bird watching, and preserving the natural habitat meadows and wetlands.

Playing fields for recreation such as soccer, field hockey, and baseball.

Municipal office space and centrally located public safety facilities that can easily accommodate future growth.

Plymouth Hall for the Parks and Recreation Department to accommodate indoor recreation, senior center, teen center, and daycare.

Land bank for future schools and Board of Education needs.

Bridgeport Hall Community Center, which lends itself to trade shows, craft bazaars, antiques shows, Booth Library book sale, and other large scale events.

We believe Newtown residents need to see a plan before they can intelligently vote on this issue. Therefore, we strongly suggest that the vote on the Fairfield Hills property be held off until September. Representatives from town boards, commissions, and agencies need to come together to form a “trustee group,” similar to what we have for the Meeting House, in order to formulate a prioritized phased plan for the future of this property.

Sincerely,

Mary Maki
