Girls' Track And Field Team Remains Unbeaten; Boys Continue Winning Ways

Newtown High School’s girls’ track and field team improved to 12-0 by defeating three opponents at Brookfield High School on May 12, and the boys’ squad went 2-1 on Senior Night at Blue & Gold Stadium on May 13. Both squads also participated in the Spartan Midnight-Sunrise Invitational at Amity High School in Woodbridge May 9-10.

In their visit to Brookfield, Newtown defeated the host Bobcats 111.5-38.5, defeated Weston 83-67, and topped New Fairfield 112.2-33.5.

The girls will be home for Senior Night on Monday, May 19, when New Milford, Masuk, and Bethel visit Blue & Gold Stadium for a 4 pm meet.

Boys

The Nighthawks beat Weston 79.5-70.5, and Brookfield 91-61, and fell 103.5-46.5 to New Fairfield.

4x100: 1. Ian Lew, Will Roman, Tristan Pears, and Matt Mossbarger, 46.44

4x800 Kyle Mangold, David Csordas, Nate Steinebrey, and Ethan Burg paced the Nighthawks with a time of 8:51.0.

110 Hurdles: Sam Boland finished in the top three with a time of 17.3.

100: Matt Mossbarger qualified for the SWC Championships with a time of 11.7.

1600: Grandon Smith qualified for SWC and Class LL championships with a time of 4:38.0. Christopher Gamble and David Csordas both qualified for SWC Championships with times of 4:43.0 and 4:46.0 respectively.

300 Hurdles: Boland improved his time to 43.8 and George Ferris qualified for the SWC Championships with a time of 44.9.

800: Nick Swenson, battling back from injury, ran a 2:20.0.

200: Mossbarger qualified for LL and SWC championships with a time of 23.8 and Cole Terry qualified for the SWC Championships with a time of 24.3. 

3200: Nate Steinebrey qualified for SWC Championships with a time of 10:37.0.

4x400 Relay: Tristan Pears, Smith, Wes Morlock, and Mossbarger ran a time of 3:37.0.

Triple Jump: Kevin Gorman improved his personal record to 38-5.75.

“Grandon Smith is becoming one of the standout performers on this team. Between qualifying for states in the 1600 and 52.88 in the 4x400 relay, he is simply amazing,” Coach Tom Brant said. “Our 4x400 has cut over 13 seconds off their time from the first meet. Matt Mossbarger ran a 51.7, that is fast. Nate Steinebrey came through today for us today qualifying in the 3200 with a real strong time. I’m really happy for our seniors on this team. This has been a transition year for them and they have done an amazing job. They should be very proud of themselves.”

Spartan Invitational

Gus Porto qualified for LL and SWC Championships with a time of 23.80 in the 200 dash. He finished eighth overall.

Mossbarger finished second overall and qualified for the LL Championships with a time of 52.00 in the open 400. Morlock ran a 55.03.

David Csordas ran a 2:10.94 in the 800.

Ethan Burg, Christopher Gamble, and Nate Steinebrey ran a 4:51.17, 4:52.01, and 4:58.34 in the 1600.

Boland finished sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.36.

Boland, Smith, Morlock, and Mossbarger ran a 3:39.08 and finished fourth in the 4x400 relay.

The 4x800 team of Csordas, Ethan Burg, Smith, and Gamble finished in 8:37.89, to improve their LL Championship time.
