Newtown High School’s girls’ tennis team defeated host Masuk at Monroe’s Wolf Park on May 9, topped host Notre Dame-Fairfield on May 12, and defeated visiting Stratford, at Dickinson Park, on May 13 — winning all three matches by 7-0 scores.

The Newtown boys, meanwhile, won two of three matches at home this past week. The Nighthawks topped Masuk in a shortened match, 5-0, on May 9, lost 5-2 to Pomperaug of Southbury 5-2 on May 12, and edged New Milford 4-3 the next day.

In an effort to beat the rain, the Newtown and Masuk girls played eight-game sets. Lauren Beier won 8-0, Mia Terracino won 8-1, Caroline Lockwood came out on top, 8-0, and Emily McCoy also won 8-0. In doubles play, teams of Julia Frattaroli/Aimee Alexander and Simone Felis/Sarah Lynch both won by 8-1 scores, and Astrid Sundberg/Simran Chand won 8-4.

Against Stratford, Beier, Terracino, Annie Beier, and McCoy all won in two sets. The doubles teams of Frattaroli/Alexander and Sundberg/Chand also won in two sets. Stratford forfeited at third doubles.

In the match against Notre Dame, with rain again a threat, eight-game sets were played. Beier overcame deficits of 6-3 and 7-4 to top Hannah Londoner 10-8. Terracino, Lily Mittleman, and Alisha Aggarwal all won. The doubles team of Frattaroli/Alexander also won, and Notre Dame forfeited at second and third doubles.

Newtown’s boys’ squad, after defeating Barlow 5-0, fell to Pomperaug despite doubles wins by the No. 2 team of Michael Dutsar/Peter Winans and the No. 3 tandem of James Frazzetta/Justin Oelberg. No. 2 singles player Matt Carino came close but fell 7-6, 7-6 to Patrick Lebel.

The Hawks rebounded with a win over New Milford as Nic Klein, Joey Conrad, and Winans won at second, third, and fourth singles, respectively. The No. 2 doubles team of Charlie Poarch and Oelberg also came out on top. No. 1 singles player Keaton McCleary pushed Hunter Berrett to three sets, but lost 4-6, 6-3, 3-3, and the top doubles tandem of Dutsar and Frazzetta lost a three-setter, 7-6, 1-6, 2-6.

Lauren Beier hits a return during a comeback win at Notre Dame-Fairfield on May 12.
