Newtown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team defeated Bethel and Notre Dame-Fairfield this week to improve to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in South-West Conference play heading into a May 15 scheduled visit to FCIAC foe New Canaan. The Newtown boys’ lacrosse team, after beating Notre Dame, suffered a tough double overtime loss to nonconference opponent Glastonbury to stand at 10-3 (4-1) heading into scheduled home games with Stratford and Staples of Westport on Wednesday and Thursday.

The girls built a commanding 10-3 halftime lead on their way to victory over Bethel at Blue & Gold Stadium on May 12. Carley Ferris had five goals and two assists, Meaghan Brophy had three goals and two assists, and Julia Shugrue netted two goals. Goaltender Kyle Dandrea made seven saves. Newtown then dominated host Notre Dame-Fairfield 18-2 the next day, in a game rescheduled because of soggy field conditions caused by rain the week before.

The Nighthawks are slated to host Joel Barlow of Redding on Monday, May 19, when the Falcons visit Treadwell Park for a 5:15 pm battle — Newtown’s last game of the regular season.

Newtown’s boys’ squad beat host Notre Dame 17-2 on May 8. Jake Ball had three goals and five assists, and Chase Wurtz and Logan Wash both also hit the net three times. Matt Meyers had two goals and two assists. Against Glastonbury, Newtown fell 9-8 despite three goals and an assist by Alec Beauchemin and two goals each by Jared Pearson and Meyers (the latter of whom added a pair of assists). Goaltender Jon Rospenda made ten saves in the win.

The Hawks will host Brookfield in the regular-season finale on Tuesday, May 20, when the Bobcats come to Blue & Gold Stadium for a 7 pm contest.

Matt Meyers, right, looks to make a pass as a Notre Dame player defends during Newtown's 17-2 win on May 8.
