MILFORD â The statue of the hawk was raised up and took an almost historic victory lap around the Jonathan Law track on Tuesday night.
No, the Newtown High School boysâ track team did not capture the South-West Conference championship (not yet, anyhow), but with one last regular season sweep â and a much-coveted win over arch-rival Pomperaug â it was almost as good.
âI canât believe this!â said an elated coach Ed Obloj. âThis whole season has been fantastic and itâs a testament to the senior class and the whole teamâs dedication to the program. I am so proud of what they accomplished. Itâs been our best season ever . . . and thereâs more to do on Monday.â
The âHawks defeated Law, 891/2Â to 591/2 , and hammered Notre Dame, 132-16, but the sweetest victory of them all was the 97-52 decision over Pomperaug, which has long sit upon the pinnacle of the South-West Conference.
âWhat a ride!â said coach Carl Paternoster. âI donât want this feeling to end for this group. They all mean so much to me and they will leave a special place in my heart for what they have accomplished to this point.â
The âHawks finished the regular season at 12-1-1, 6-0-1 in the Colonial Division. The SWC championship meet â for which 12 individuals have qualified â will now follow on Monday, at 4:30 pm, at New Milford High School.
âThey still have big goals for Monday at SWCs,â said coach Paternoster, âbut no matter what happens the rest of the way, Iâll always remember the Pomperaug victory and the âRaising of the Hawkâ victory lap.â
Stephen Ambrogio (100m, long jump, triple jump), Blair Balmforth (100m, 200m), John Ehlers (100m, 200m), Kyle Tobin (110HH, 300IH, 200m), Tony Napoleone (110HH, 300 IH), Frederico Aloisi (110HH), Jeff Heller (1600m, 3,200m), Peter Terrance (200m, 400m), Dave Rod (800m, 3200m), Dan Maxwell (800m), Dave Strong (pole vault) and Matt Regan (shot put) have all qualified for the SWC meet.
The team also gets to take three relays â the 4x800 (Dan Phillips, Cuyler Bryant, Maxwell and Heller), the 4x100 (Blamforth, Ehlers, Tom Fullman and Terrance) and the 4x400 (Fullman, Ehlers, Terrance and Tobin).
Since the win over Pomperaug was the sweetest for Newtown, the following are the results from that particular matchup:
Newtown           97
Pomperaug        52
