STRATFORD â When Matt Johnson and Chris Catropa of Bunnell both carded rounds of 1-under 35 on Tuesday at Oronoque Country Club, there was really little the Newtown High School golf team could do.
And, so, with Johnson and Catropa finishing as co-medalists with those blistering rounds, the Bulldogs defeated the Nighthawks, 157-172. The âHawks fell to 8-6 overall, 6-6 in the South-West Conference.
Now, Ben Moore and Mark Werbeck (who has been hampered with a wrist injury for most of the spring) had pretty good rounds, too. Moore carded a 3-over 39 and Werbeck carded a 4-over 40 â their best rounds of the year.
But the âDogs got a 43 from Nick Sulk and a 44 from Jeff Kunze to counteract the 46 the Nighthawks received from Steve Hubina and the 47 from Joe Ziemann.
The âHawks hosted Masuk on Thursday at the Newtown Country Club (after press time) and will travel to Crestbrook Park in Watertown on Monday before finishing the regular season down in Westport against Staples.
The SWC Tournament will tee off at the Ridgewood Country Club on Wednesday, May 30.
