It was so close â until it all just slipped away.
Foran was aiming for its 13th win of the season on Monday, but in the fifth inning that idea seemed in danger because the Newtown High School baseball team â on a Matt McCarthy RBI grounder â had pulled to within one run.
But then the Lions exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning (two singles, two doubles and a triple did most of the damage) and pulled away enroute to a 12-6 win.
That five-run explosion ruined what had been a pretty good effort by the Nighthawks, who fell to 5-13 overall and 5-9 in the South-West Conference as the 2001 season starts to draw to a close. The âHawks finished up at Weston on Wednesday and at Kolbe-Cathedral on Thursday (both after press time).
Foran had opened the game with a run in the first (aided by a two-base error) and then two more in the second to take an early 3-0 lead, but Collin Anderson roped a shot in the gap between centerfield and rightfield and rumbled all the way around the bases for a homer.
Foran took a 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth, but in the bottom of the frame the âHawks scored two runs of their own after Dave Roodhuyzen walked, Greg Burkhart singled (scoring Roodhuyzen) and Kevin Carolan grounded to short to score Burkart.
In the bottom of the fifth, Rob Weiss banged out a leadoff single and then moved to second and third on a pair of passed balls. He then scored on an infield grounder by McCarthy to trim the Foran lead to 5-4.
But the Lions took charge of the game in the sixth inning with those five big runs.
In the bottom of the frame, Newtown scored one last time on a run-scoring single by Burkhart.
Nick Savino was 3-for-4 on the afternoon while Carolan and Anderson were both 2-for-4. Burkhart was 2-for-2 while John Pantan and Weiss had singles in Newtownâs 11-hit attack.
Last Friday, it was the long ball that hurt Newtown in a loss to Masuk. Brian Cavanaugh went deep in the first inning and then Jesse Lent and Jeff Hourigan went deep in the second inning as the Panthers staked themselves to a 6-0 enroute to a 6-4 win.
Newtown rallied with three runs in the top of the third inning. Weiss led off with a double and was sacrificed to third. Burkhart then walked and Carolan drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Savino was plunked with a pitch and then McCarthy cracked a two-run triple to trim the Masuk lead to 6-3.
In the fifth, the âHawks got just one run closer. Roodhuyzen reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and then scored on a Carolan sacrifice fly.
The âHawks had just four hits on the afternoon.
Last Wednesday, Newtown defeated Joel Barlow, 8-2, and needed just nine hits to do it. Ron Isler was 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBI and Carolan was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Roodhuyzen, Dan Murphy, Anderson and Savino all had hits while Anderson drove in two runs and Weiss (sacrifice) and Chris Arnold (groundout) drove in one run apiece.
Keith Neidig picked up the win and Isler earned the save, the two pitchers combining on a nifty five-hitter.
