Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Saturday

Residents of Newtown, Danbury, New Fairfield, Redding, and Ridgefield are reminded that the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day sponsored by Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA) will take place this weekend.

Volunteers will be at Newtown Public Works Garage, at 4 Turkey Hill Road in Newtown, accepting items on Saturday, May 17, from 9 am to 2 pm.

Each town within the HRRA’s municipality sponsors are least one Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day annually. The events are free to residents of the sponsoring towns and are paid for by tax dollars from each town.

There are no other cost-effective, environmentally safe, and legal options for disposal of household hazardous waste available to residents of the HRRA region (Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Danbury, Kent, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield and Sherman).

What To Bring

Residents are encouraged to clean their homes of any of the following: oil based paints, stains and varnishes, paint thinners and strippers, and wood preservatives; resins, rosins, and adhesives; furniture, floor, and metal polishes; rug and upholstery cleaners; oven, toilet bowl, and drain cleaners; swimming pool chemicals; fluorescent bulbs; pesticides, herbicides, insecticides (including lawn care products); flea powder; moth balls; spot removers; dry cleaning solvents; lighter fluids; septic tank degreasers; engine degreasers; and waste fuels (kerosene, gasoline).

Also, carburetor cleaners, brake fluids; transmission fluids, car waxes; full or partially full aerosol cans; rubber cement, airplane glue; photo chemicals, chemistry sets; hobby supplies; rechargeable (Ni-Cd) batteries; camera batteries; and thermostats, thermometers.

What Not To Bring

The following items will not be accepted on Saturday (or at any Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day): Electronics or computers; latex paints (allow to dry, then put in garbage); empty aerosol cans (put in garbage); household batteries (put in garbage); PCB capacitors; smoke detectors; auto batteries and tires; motor oil and antifreeze (recycle at town drop-off center); and ammunition, fireworks, or explosives (call the police department); radioactive materials; unknown gases; controlled substances; pathological material; and pharmaceutical or medical wastes.
