NHS Golfers Edge Masuk In SWC Finale

Newtown High School’s boys’ golf team defeated Masuk 150-152 at the Newtown Country Club’s par 33 course on Tuesday afternoon. This was the final South-West Conference match for the Hawks (8-3-1 in the conference and 10-4-1 overall). Newtown will conclude the season at Weston on Monday in a match that won’t count in the SWC standings. In Tuesday’s win, Steve Oberstadt shot a 35 to earn medalist honors. Kevin O’Connell and Kevin Troy each shot a 38 and Chris McCann shot a 39 to lead the Nighthawks.

Newtown dropped a 166-164 decision to Pomperaug on the road on Monday. Oberstadt, once again, was the top golfer, but the Nighthawks fell short. O’Connell and Troy each shot a 42 and McCann shot a  43. Pomperaug stayed undefeated with the win.

On May 8, the Nighthawks hosted and defeated Bunnell. Newtown shot a collective 154 to Bunnell’s 167. Oberstadt shot a 36, McCann shot a 37, O’Connell shot a 39 and Paul Michaud shot a 42 for the Nighthawks.

On May 7, Newtown went to Redding Country Club and defeated Joel Barlow 180-187. Oberstadt took top honors with a 40. O’Connell shot a 42, McCann shot a 46 and Kevin Schneider shot a 52 to round out Newtown’s top four.
