Jodi Miklaszewski, daughter of Ed and Donna Miklaszewski of Sandy Hook, was recently inducted into Phi Eta Sigma freshman honor society at Salisbury State University. A 2000 graduate of Newtown High School, Miss Miklaszweski is a freshman majoring in communications and the vice president of communications for Delta Gamma sorority at Salisbury State University.

Laura Ashleigh Smarrella

 

Laura Ashleigh Smarrella of Newtown received a $4,000 scholarship from Stew Leonard’s. She was one of three winners and will be attending Western New England College in Springfield, Mass in the fall.

Colin M. Sheehan of Sandy Hook was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Salve Regina University on May 20. He is the son of Robert Sheehan of Greenwich and Nancy Sheehan of Sandy Hook.

Linda Mortenson of Newtown received a Master of Science degree from Marist College on May 19.

Jamie K. Nielsen of Newtown received a Bachelor of Science degree with a finance concentration from Bryant College on May 19.

Carolyn B. Anders has completed the spring semester at Colorado State University in Fort Collins with a perfect cumulative GPA of 4.0. She is an Interior Design major and a member of the CSU Co-ed Cheer squad, the Delta Delta Delta sorority, and the Golden Key National Honor Society. This summer, Miss Anders will be in London, England, for an Interior Design internship. She is a 1997 graduate of Newtown High School.

Two Newtown residents – Leanne Lopato and Jorie Moore graduated May 10 from the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing. The students were among 44 others that competed a two-year registered nurse diploma program.

Cadet Greg Whalen, son of John and Kelly Whalen of Newtown is one of 52 seniors scheduled to receive a high school diploma at the Missouri Military Academy May 27 during the Academy’s 112th Commencement Exercises. Designated as an exemplary private school by the U.S. Department of Education, Missouri Military Academy is ranked by the U.S. Army as a top JROTC “Honor Unit with Distinction.” Since its founding in 1889, M.M.A. has provided a program of college preparation, leadership, athletics and moral and spiritual training for boys in grade 4 through 12.

Alisa Popovic of Newtown received a bachelor’s degree from Purchase College State University of New York during commencement ceremonies on May 12.

Ellen LaPorte, daughter of former Newtown residents Peter and Mary-Ann

LaPorte and a 1997 graduate of Newtown High, was graduated Summa cum

Laude from Barnard College of Columbia University on May 14. Ms LaPorte was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society and won two academic prizes, one for scholarship and one for excellence in the fine arts.

Ms LaPorte majored in music at Barnard and studied piano at Manhattan School of Music.  In the Fall, she will attend Yale University where she begins work toward a PhD in Historical Musicology.
