You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 10 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door mini-bus service Monday through Friday. Monday from 1 to 3 pm the mini-bus will go to Sand Hill Plaza. Fridays, the bus will alternate going to Danbury Fair Mall and to Berkshire Shopping Plaza. Cost is 60 cents each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75 cents each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

A day trip to MOHONK MOUNTAIN is coming up on Wednesday, May 30. Departure is 9 am, and cost is $60. Please join us if you can; there are a couple of openings left.

A SPECIAL NOTE: The Commission on Aging financially sponsored the RSVP Volunteers of Newtown so that they were able to attend the annual luncheon on May 23 at The Amber Room. The 50 seniors who attended appreciated the commissionâs generosity.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND, LARRY AYCE will be at the senior center on Thursday, June 7, at 1 pm. There will be a lot of foot-stompinâ music and singalongs. Join us for the fun.

REMINDERS: OUR ANNUAL PICNIC will be Thursday, June 28, at Dickinson Park on Elm Drive. The party will run from 11 am to 3 pm. Cost is just $4 per person. Stop by the senior center or call 270-4310 to sign up. Bring to the picnic your favorite lawn chair, sunglasses, playing cards, a big smile, and be ready to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon with friends. Hamburgers, hot dogs and salads will be served.

The American Legion Auxiliary of Newtown is looking for volunteers to knit or crochet slippers for the VA Hospital as well as for those in the armed forces. This worthwhile project is called âOPERATION TOASTY TOES,â and Marilyn Place has the directions for slippers whether knitted or crocheted. She also has plenty of donated yarn for anyone willing to undertake this project. Call if you are interested, 270-4310.

We can always use DONATIONS OF MATERIAL AND YARN at the senior center.

HMO BAIL-OUT HELP is available at the senior center on Monday afternoons from 1 to 2 pm by appointment only. A HICAP/CHOICES volunteer will be here to help with problems and/or changes. Call the center to make an appointment. To talk to a CHOICES representative at any time, call 800/944-9422.

YOGA CLASSES HAVE BEEN EXPANDED at Newtown Senior Center. Join Helen Herbold on Monday afternoons at 1 as well as Thursday mornings at 10:15. Helen specializes in hatha yoga, a gentle system of yoga where each student listens to his or her body, stretches within his or her capability without discomfort, and learns to use diaphramatic breathing, relaxation and meditation. This gentle type of yoga can be practiced by anyone at any age and state of health. Benefits include improvements in flexibility, circulation, concentration, balance, tension and even your internal organs. Bring a mat or towel to lie on and wear loose clothing (no belts; sweats are perfect).

Join teacher Toni Ivey for CRAFT CLASSES each Tuesday at 1 pm.

Debbie Kenyon is now leading the EXERCISE CLASS on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10 am. The classes are vigorous yet gentle, with lots of stretches. Participants will be encouraged to go at their own rate and will finish feeling refreshed, vigorated and with more energy. Come join the fun.

Join us at BROOKFIELD LANES each Tuesday and Thursday for a great time bowling. We meet at noon and the cost is only $1.25 per game.

NEW HORIZONS meets the first Tuesday of the month at 3 pm. The next meeting will be June 5.

THE BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP meets the first Wednesday of the month from 2 to 3 pm, so the next program will be on June 6. We will be discussing The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx.

We have started our CHORUS GROUP again. Join us at the senior center each Thursday afternoon at 1 pm. Join us, too, if you play the piano.

The QUILTING CLASS meets every Friday at 10 am.

THE MOBILE SCAN BONE DENSITY TESTING UNIT will be at the senior center on Friday, June 22. Stop by the senior center to pick up a questionnaire and medical insurance form you will need for the test, and then call American MobileScan at 888-456-1126 to schedule an appointment.

Â âTHE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIOâ will be presented on Wednesday, July 11.

Details concerning TRIPS FOR NEWTOWN SENIORS are available at the senior center. The following is basic information for upcoming offerings. Visit the senior center for full itineraries and reservations.

A historically and culturally-rich trip, âTHE BERKSHIRES & WILLIAMS INNâ will take place Monday and Tuesday, June 25-26. Cost is $209 per person double, we leave the senior center at 7:30 am, and will be staying at Williams Inn in Williamstown, Mass.

A day trip to see High Society at WESTCHESTER DINNER THEATER will be on Wedneday, June 6. Cost is $57 and departure is 9:30 am. Hurry, seats are going fast.

There will be a tour of PROVIDENCE on Wednesday, June 13. Cost is $59 per person and departure will be 7 am.

We will spend Wednesday, June 20, in Westchester County, N.Y., focusing on Caramoor House Museum. The June 20 trip will leave from Newtown at 9:45 and cost is $56.

Itâs polka time again. Join us for the POLKAFEST AT HUNTâS LANDING on Tuesday, July 10. Cost is $37 and we will be leaving by 9 am.

âCOASTAL CONNECTICUTâ is a day trip we will be hosting on Wednesday, July 18, to lower Fairfield County. Departure is 9 am and cost is $64 per person. Visit the senior center for details.

Trips are also being scheduled to the CANADIAN ROCKIES in July, trips to BERMUDA AND NASHVILLE in September, NEW MEXICO in October, and a trip to FRANCE as well as an outing to RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL for its traditional Christmas Spectacular in November.

Do Not Glorify Violence

Thank you for your service and thank you Brandon Moore. I come from a family of veterans that goes back decades. I am grateful for their sacrifice and have advocated for their rights, as an attorney. There is such a divide between the demands of military service and civilian everyday life that many do not appreciate. I watched my oldest brother manage the two cultures. In the current political climate, I want someone with a long track record of community advocacy that addresses the needs of the Newtown elderly, students, young families, the growing costs of everyday living expenses, gun violence, food insecurity, division amongst groups, long term strategizing for economic development and improvement of quality of life. I have lived in Newtown five years and still do not know all there is to know in order to address the needs of neighbors. Michelle has lived in Newtown for sixteen years and has a record of fighting for the needs of the entire community. At this moment in our existence that is the type of fighter that we need and that is why I am grateful for Brandon Moore's service but my family and I support Michelle Ku and hope that she will be the State Representative and that Brandon Moore will be involved in moving the needs of the Newtown community forward, with the rest of us learning the needs of the community.

I Served Under Brandon And He’s The Real Deal

In the time since this letter was written, the developer looking to redevelop this location reasonably accommodated this concern with an entrance and exit onto state rt 34, a main road. They did not get the same accommodation Toll Brothers was granted for the Simpson's condos, condos on what used to be horse pasture, and before that a Native American camp site. As for the open space concerns, this site is located adjacent to public sports fields, walking distance to Sandy Hook Center, and there is a trail head for a nice walking path in the woods and along the river directly across Oakview. Potential residents would have generous access to open space.

Accessible Housing Is Good, But Not On Ill-Equipped Oakview Road

I generally agree with Tom Johnson, re: following the rules of the road, both legal and/or commonly accepted. However, there are times, especially when the bulk of the traffic is using Main Street to bypass congestion on 84, when yielding to turning drivers at the flagpole makes the most sense. Coming home from Trumbull today, I noticed that several southbound drivers were planning to turn left onto Church Hill, and the line of cars went beyond what I could see. The northbound lane was also very busy. I admit that I may have waived my right by slowing down to create a gap for a southbound car to turn. I then moved to the staging position within the circle (small car so no disruption to northbound traffic), but the intersection was then blocked by southbound traffic turning left. Of note, that intersection can easily become gridlocked if 6-8 drivers claim right of way (3 or 4 cars in each direction).Thankfully, the third lefthand turner stayed back and waived me through. To many people, it is not clear who has right of way in such circumstances. IMO, it makes sense to ensure that traffic can travel north and south, and sometimes that means yielding the right of way. Hopefully someday the State will address the traffic issues on 84 and we will no longer have as much congestion at the flagpole.
