BOSTON, Massachusetts – The Harvard University men’s basketball team has named its captain for the 2001-2002 season and it’s junior Andrew Gellert of Newtown. The announcement was made at the team’s end-of-the-season banquet on May 7.

Gellert played all 26 games for the Crimson last season and average 7.5 points a game while pulling down 3.9 rebounds a game. He led the Ivy League and was nationally-ranked in steals for the second straight season, averaging 2.8 thefts a game (8th in the country). He also finished second on the team and eighth in the Ivy League in assists (3.0 a game), shot .480 from the field, and knocked down 15 three-pointers.

And just a short time ago, Gellert was selected as a member of the United States men’s basketball team which will play in the 16th World Maccabiah Games this summer in Israel.

“Drew truly embodies all that we ask for in our players,” said coach Frank Sullivan. “It’s safe to say that his motivation and work ethic rival the absolute best who have worn a Harvard shirt through the years. Few players are as universally respected, and this respect will only be enhanced as he assumes this very significant leadership role for us next season.”

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – It was only a year ago that Greg Simoneau was part of the strongest one-two punch in high school diving. Now, he is part of one of the strongest diving teams at the collegiate level.

At the Springfield Invitational back in December, Greg – a 2000 graduate of Newtown High School – finished third overall on the one-meter board, fifth overall on the three-meter board, and helped Springfield College capture the meet.

It was quite an accomplishment for Greg, who continued to have strong dual meet season. In February, he scored 256.80 points against the United States Coast Guard Academy and 259.12 points against Babson College to win first in both meet.

At the NEWMAC (New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference) meet, he claimed the one-meter championship with a national qualifying score of 436.55 ppoints (in the preliminaries, he had scored 460.50 points). On the three-meter board, he finished second to his teammate, Dan Bartholomew of California, with 410.95 points.

“Greg is a very dedicated and talented diver,” said coach Peter Avdoulos. “He continues to work hard on his consistency as well as more difficult dives. He has improved greatly in his first collegiate season. His goal is to make it to the national championships and he has the work ethic and talent to do it.”

BRISTOL, Rhode Island – Roger Williams University captured its first Commonwealth Coast Conference softball championship with a thrilling, 1-0 win over Endicott College on Saturday, April 28, and sophomore Amanda Morici of Newtown was there to share in it. Morici had scored the deciding run in a 3-2 win over the University of New England in the CCC semi-finals two days before. She scored as a pinch-runner, coming home on a hit by Tracy Chaves of Tiverton, Rhode Island.

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire – Jon Winton of Newtown scored 20 goals and assisted on 23 others as the New Hampshire College men’s lacrosse team finished the season at 5-8 and Winton finished his four-year career.

A graduate of St. Thomas More School, Winton was named to the weekly Northeast-10 Conference honor roll after totaling nine points (4 goals, 5 assists) in a 14-7 win over Assumption College on April 11. He also recorded his 100th career point in that effort.

A two-time captain, Winton led NHC in scoring as a junior and closed out his career with 122 points (69 goals, 53 assists) in 49 career games. He ranks eighth in career assists and 11th in both career goals and career points.
