BRIDGEPORT â Some would see it as nothing more than a case of being too little, too late. But the Newtown High School baseball team â despite what has happened to it this spring â will leave the 2001 season behind with at least some positive thoughts.
Thatâs because the Nighthawks put together a modest, two-game winning streak to finish out the schedule â fashioned on the strength of a 4-1 win over Weston last Wednesday and an 11-1 win over Kolbe-Cathedral last Thursday.
The âHawks boosted their record to 7-13 overall, 7-8 in the South-West Conference.
Last Wednesday, Keith Neidig spun a four-hitter in leading Newtown past Weston. Rob Weiss was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Ron Isler was 2-for-3 with an RBI as the âHawks â with just five hits of their own â scored three runs in the top of the second and one more in the top of the third and just coasted on Neidigâs arm the rest of the way.
In the second, Dan Murphy reached on an error and scored on a double by Weiss, who later stole third. Dave Roodhuyzen was walked and when he attempted to steal second, an error allowed Weiss to score and Roodhuyzen to reach third. Roodhuyzen then scored on a wild pitch.
In the third, Matt McCarthy doubled and scored on a single by Isler.
Last Thursday, it was John Fiscella, Neidig and Nick Savino combining on a six-hitter to lead Newtown past Kolbe-Cathedral down in Bridgeport. Fiscella also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles and a double while Kevin Carolan and McCarthy each went 2-for-3. While Carolan doubled and tripled, McCarthy singled and doubled.
The âHawks â who collected 12 hits on the afternoon â held just a 3-1 lead through four innings over Kolbe, which fell to 1-19 overall and 0-15 in the SWC, before exploding for eight runs in the top of the fifth.
In the fifth, Savino led off with a single and then McCarthy followed with a double. Collin Anderson singled and Fiscella doubled and still there were no outs. Roodhuyzen and Matt Lapak both followed with singles before Carolan lashed a two-out double. Savino, McCarthy and Anderson followed with three singles in a row as the âHawks sent 13 men to the plate in the inning.
The game ended on the 10-run mercy rule.
And so the season ends well, but not without its disappointments. The extra-inning loss to Bethel High School, down in Bethel, a couple of weeks ago probably will rank at the top of the list for the Nighthawks.
Ron Isler (.396, 2 doubles, 3 triples, 14 RBI) and Kevin Carolan (.377, 10 RBI) were probably the two best hitters on the team, but as a team the Nighthawks hit at a .309 clip and thatâs because guys like Rob Weiss (.340, 5 doubles, 5 triples), Nick Savino (.323, 2 HR, 20 runs scored), Matt McCarthy (.321, 2 HR, 13 RBI), Collin Anderson (.318, 3 HR, 15 RBI) and Dan Murphy (.304, 3 HR, 11 RBI) were also swinging some pretty good lumber.
On the mound, the âHawks (with a 5.70 team earned run average) did not find a whole lot of success, but did find Keith Neidig (2-3, 4.62 ERA, 30 strikeouts in 331/3Â innings) and Greg Burkhart (2-3, 5.29 ERA, 40 strikeouts in 41 innings) performing pretty well.
No, the Newtown High School baseball team did not get over the top and into the South-West Conference and CIAC state tournaments like it hoped it would, but at least the two-game winning streak had the âHawks leaving the 2001 season behind with some positive thoughts.
