Holiday Traffic Enforcement

Town police will receive a $6,050 federal matching grant to be used for heightened motor vehicle law enforcement during the Memorial Day weekend and Fourth of July weekend holiday periods.

In the enforcement program, police will target drunken drivers and people who fail to use seatbelts and child safety seats. Extra police patrol officers will be on duty during the holiday periods.

Police participate in the project annually with the aim of deterring drunken driving on local roads.

Newtown is one of 41 municipalities in the state to receive the grant funds for increased motor vehicle enforcement. The federal funds are a matching grant, which the towns match with an equal amount of money.

Added enforcement is scheduled for Friday, May 25, through Monday, May 28, and from Friday, June 29, through Wednesday, July 4.
