Help Make Prom Night Safe
Help Make Prom Night
Safe
To the Editor:
With the high school prom and graduation fast approaching, we would like to take this opportunity to ask that high school parents and guardians ensure your childrenâs celebration of these special occasions is safe, healthy, and enjoyable. We will do everything in our power to make this happen. However, once the students leave the designated locations of these events, their safety and well being are in their hands â and yours.
Traditionally after-prom and postgraduation parties are arranged in advance and often held at studentsâ homes. If you are hosting such an event in your home, or your child is planning to attend one elsewhere, please think and plan ahead for safety. The Connecticut legislature passed a bill making it illegal to host underage drinking parties on private property. The measure now goes to the governor, who has been a strong advocate of the bill, for her signature. This bill reinforces the intent of the Town Ordinance Concerning Underage Drinking passed by the Newtown Legislative Council in 2004.
The Newtown PTSA is hosting an alcohol-free post-prom party in the high school gymnasium from midnight to 5 am. There will be dancing and entertainment as well as a raffle with many prizes, including a car! Students may leave at any time, but they will not be allowed to reenter. Please encourage your child to attend this safe and fun event.
Regardless of your childâs destination for the evening, please be certain that you are aware of his/her plans. We encourage you to contact the host family of any private party your child wishes to attend ahead of time to determine that there will be adults present at the party and that alcohol will not be available. Travel to and from the evening events is also a matter of importance. Please talk with your child and establish contingency plans for any situation that may arise to ensure their safety.
Thank you for all that you do as loving parents to protect the safety and well being of your child. We will do everything we can to assist you in this endeavor and will continue to work toward a drug and alcohol free community.
Sincerely,
