Middle Gate Loves To Read
Middle Gate Loves To Read
The week of May 2â5, Middle Gate School students participated in the Middle Gate Loves to Read program.
The program is designed to encourage students and their families to turn off the TV and explore the world of reading. The week kicked off with an assembly on Tuesday, a used book sale on Wednesday and Thursday, and culminated with a Parade of Characters on Friday. Students and teachers selected their favorite character from their readings and dressed up as that person.
The used book sale was a huge success. The goal was to raise $2,000 for the Middle Gate Library to expand its collection. Final sales amounted to $3,553.
Jill Roth, a recent newcomer to Newtown, chaired the sale. In Arizona, she had organized book sales for four years. Middle Gateâs sale marks her fifth book sale. Ms Roth has been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Middle Gate community. In the past, donations of 10,000 books were the norm. Said Ms Roth, âThe Middle Gate community is amazing. Over 15,000 books were donated for this event.
âThis is a great opportunity to clean out the shelves at home, and children have a chance to encounter new authors at reduced prices,â she continued.
In the end, 570 books were donated to the Middle Gate School Library, 7,000 to Booth Library, and several hundred to Katrina Relief schools.
