SHS Joins In ACES Fun

Last Wednesday morning, May 3, at 10, Sandy Hook Elementary School’s kindergarten through third graders took part in the 18th annual All Children Exercising Simultaneously (ACES) event. Project ACES is the brainchild of Len Saunders, a New Jersey physical education teacher.

His hope, in 1989, was to get one school in every state to participate. That first year, 240,000 students in 1,200 schools in the United States and overseas made the event a huge success. Activities vary from school to school. Some do aerobics, some jog, others bike ride or have relay races. The point is to get children moving.

The first Wednesday in May, at the beginning of Fitness Month, has been designated as ACES day. At 10 am local time, students start exercising for 15 to 45 minutes. It is up to each school to choose the activity and duration.

At Sandy Hook School, more than 600 students and teachers participated. Everyone had a great time, with some first and second grade classes forming Conga lines during the activity.
