MINNEAPOLIS SCULPTURE GARDEN WILL CELEBRATE 20TH ANNIVERSARY

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. (AP) — The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this summer. “The Spoonbridge and Cherry,” the garden’s centerpiece and perhaps its famous sculpture, has become an iconic symbol of Minneapolis.

The garden is a partnership between the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Department.

The area where the sculpture garden now sits was once a swamp. The city took control of it in 1893 and built a large armory there, but it was demolished because of decay.

Some of the 40 sculptures placed in the garden were commissioned and others were purchased from galleries and collectors.

About 6.5 million people have visited the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden in the past two decades.
