Breast Cancer Memorial Exhibit

At UConn Health Center June 2-10

FARMINGTON — “The Face of Breast Cancer,” a memorial exhibit that pays tribute to women who have died of breast cancer, will be on display at the University of Connecticut Health Center June 2-10. Visitors can see the exhibit daily from 9 am to 8 pm in the main hospital lobby.

The exhibit is part of a national tour that began in Anchorage, Alaska in 1993. “The Face of Breast Cancer” includes portraits of 84 women, from all 50 states and all walks of life, who had breast cancer. Along with portraits, the exhibit also includes something about each woman’s story – such as sentiments from her family of friends – as well as statistics about her breast cancer in every state in the United States.

“By putting human faces on the overwhelming number of breast cancer cases in this country, the exhibit gently and dramatically educates people about breast cancer,” said Christine Kaminski of the UConn Cancer Center.

The exhibit is made possible by the Connecticut chapter of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), a grassroots advocacy campaign dedicated to fighting breast cancer. The exhibit’s display at the Health Center will coincide with National Cancer Survivors Week, a nationwide salute to America’s 8.9 million cancer survivors.

The Health Center will participate in National Cancer Survivors Week with a “celebration of life” at 1 pm on Sunday, June 10. Special guest Ildiko Strehli, a breast cancer survivor who is in training for the 2002 Winter Olympics, will share her story of courage and hope. Ms Strehli developed the first Hungarian women’s bobsledding team and has competed in several World Cup events.
