Open House At

Cullens Youth Association

Cullens Youth Association is hosting an open house, Sunday, May 23, from 1 to 4 pm, at the 22-acre site located at 72 Taunton Lake Road.

Adults and youth alike are invited to stop by for camping and outdoor cooking demonstrations, canoeing and fishing demonstrations on the seven-acre pond, and an EnviroScape demonstration, taking place throughout the afternoon. Enjoy crafts, and a scavenger hunt, as well as free refreshments.

In May of 1948, a trusteeship was formed to purchase property on Church Hill Road and build two cabins as a place for Newtown’s youth to meet. Ten years later, a nonprofit organization was created to take control of the property, and was eventually named Cullens Memorial, Inc, as a tribute to Paul and Agnes Cullens, who started the first Boy and Girl Scout troops in Newtown, in 1928 and 1929. In 1982, Cullens Memorial purchased the former “Camp Wipawauag” on Taunton Lake Road as a more suitable location. The current lodge on that property was built in 1983 and the name was change to Cullens Youth Association.

Cullens Youth Association is available for use by any Newtown youth group to meet, camp, have ceremonies, and learn outdoor skills. The 2,400-square-foot lodge is complete with a kitchen, rest room, and meeting area. There is a two-acre field, four acres of wooded campsites, and the pond, suitable for canoeing and fishing.

Cullens Youth Association encourages personal growth and development in the areas of leadership, citizenship, social, spiritual, and physical fitness through the programs it sponsors.

The May 23 open house is an opportunity for community members to become familiar with the organization, and is a valuable opportunity for youth leaders to network with other leaders and share ideas.
