To the Editor:

Last Saturday evening’s Benefit Concert for Families United in Newtown (FUN) was a joy to behold. The many talented performers — many who struggle with significant challenging life circumstances — shared their passion, commitment, expertise, and enthusiasm in self-expression through their musical talent. For some of these young entertainers, they developed their musical gifts despite difficult communication and behavioral challenges. As a school psychologist who has worked in public education since the implementation of Public Law 94-142 which originally mandated free and appropriate public school services for handicapped learners, it brought tears of joy and satisfaction to my eyes to see how far we as a society have come in creating the circumstances from which such gifts could develop and flourish.

Linda Jones, who — along with her husband — established FUN and organized the event, told the audience, it does indeed “take a village” to develop the kind of infrastructure that is necessary to enable such talent to grow, mature, and reach such accomplished and glorious heights. I also fully understand that public education still has farther to go, but this annual benefit in memory of Tyler Jones is testimony to the continued commitment and dedication of his parents and siblings in showcasing the wondrous talent of youngsters on the autism spectrum that is beauteous and life-affirming to behold. I will be sure not to miss future events.

With heartfelt thanks,

Jack Bestor
