Fairfield Auction Will Sell

Over 300 Estate Lots May 31

Fairfield Auction will sell more than 300 lots from local estates on Sunday, May 31. Included are a selection of American and European decorative arts, 80-plus paintings, fine lighting, antique carpets and silver. Preview will take place Friday, May 29, and Saturday,  from 11 am to 4 pm each day as well as the morning of the auction from 9 to 11.

A strong selection of fine art includes a portrait of the steam ship St Louis by Antonio Jacobsen, as well as works by American painters Albert Herter, Charles Reiffel, William Hart, Arthur Bowen Davies, Cecil Bell, Walter Koeniger, George Bogert, James J. McAuliffe and William Merritt Post, among others.

European artists represented include Jacque Lipchitz, Marius Reynaud, Fedor Zakharov, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, A.J. Strutt, Andre Gisson, Adolf Lins, Andre Bouquet, Emile Levy, Emilio Bona and Gyula Derkovits.

A mammoth plate photograph, “Pikes Peak” by William Henry Jackson, should also find interest. The 19th Century image was found undisturbed in the original frame in a local home.

 A “time capsule” family homestead in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., yielded several exciting lots, reports auctioneer Jack DeStories. The Stanley Boardman Lockwood Civil War uniform and cavalry saber together with a group of related CDVs was found in a steamer trunk. Lockwood served first as a lieutenant in the 2nd Ohio Cavalry and later enlisted in the 105th Ohio Infantry, fighting in many battles and marching with General William Tecumseh Sherman to the sea.

A grouping of carved oak and mahogany Victorian furniture, Oriental rugs, a turn of the century canoe, and various accessories of the era were also found in the Yorktown Heights estate.

Accessories to be sold include a large terracotta bacchanalian group, a Russian enameled silver cigarette case hallmarked Khlebnikov, a Regency convex mirror with candle arms and an English enameled bronze jewelry casket. Also of interest is a group of Italian gouaches of Naples, several large Eighteenth Century church figures, a collection of delft and a bronze of St George and the Dragon after Fremiet.

Silver offerings include an 18-inch Tiffany easel mirror, a Tiffany hot water kettle and a matching pair of Elkington large footed trays with chase work. Wallace Grand Baroque, International Royal Danish and Gorham Chantilly flatware sets will be also be offered.

Other items of interest include a Stella disk music box, a molded copper weathervane depicting a retriever, a Colt dragoon revolver and a large Victorian diorama with 13 birds. Lamps by Pairpoint, Gorham and Handel, as well as a signed Babe Ruth photograph, will also be put on the block.
