Memorial Day Consumer Protection Reminders

HARTFORD — Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr, is offering several reminders for everyone planning to include alcoholic beverages as part of their weekend celebrations.

“We can all enjoy a safe, pleasant holiday weekend if everyone remembers to drink responsibly, avoid driving after drinking, and refrain from serving alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears intoxicated or who is under the legal age of 21,” Mr Farrell said. “Providing alcohol to anyone under 21 or allowing them to drink is against the law. Not only can the minors be fined for breaking this law, but the persons who knowingly permit minors to have or consume alcohol can be fined, imprisoned, or both.”

Farrell encouraged persons to visit the state’s new website, settherulesct.org, which outlines Connecticut’s laws concerning alcohol and minors and offers resources and help for adults to “hold the line” against teen drinking.

“As always, liquor stores will be closed in celebration and remembrance of Decoration Day, also known as Memorial Day, which this year falls on Monday, May 25th,” the commissioner said. “Grocery stores may be open, but are not allowed to sell beer on Monday.”

In his role as Consumer Protection Commissioner, Mr Farrell also serves as chairman of the Liquor Control Commission, which regulates all persons and businesses involved in distributing, selling, and dispensing alcoholic liquor in Connecticut.

“Finally, as we celebrate and enjoy our many liberties, let’s not forget to pay our respects to our nation’s war dead and thank all of our military personnel for their courageous service,” Mr Farrell said.
