Eagle Scout Project Means Church Has A Clean Pond To Enjoy

Christ the King Lutheran Church now has a clean pond to look at, thanks to a 150-hour service project that was lead by Eagle Scout Mario Roehrs.

Becoming an Eagle Scout is no easy task. There are six requirements that must be completed to earn the rank. The scout must be active in his troop for at least six months after attaining the rank of Life Scout. The scout must demonstrate that he lives by the principles of the Scout Oath and Law. He must have earned a total of 21 merit badges.

As a Life Scout, he must actively serve in a position of responsibility for a minimum of six months. The scout must write a statement of ambitions and life purpose and hold a Scoutmasters’ conference. And, he must plan, develop, and lead others in a service project.

For Mario this service project was to clean up the pond behind his church and it involved three major steps. The first step was done by cutting down 35 trees ranging from two inches to 18 inches in diameter.

Next Mario and his helpers fixed an old walkway by filling it in with ten yards of gravel and also building a stone wall to hold the gravel. The final step was the removal of brush and weeds growing around the pond.

In total 20 different people helped on the project which was started on February 23, 2007, and completed on July 17, 2007. While the project was completed last summer, Mario recently received his official notification from the Boy Scout Council.

Becoming an Eagle Scout was not an easy task, and Mario had both mother Hanna and father Ingo at his side to help him along. Mario also had a tremendous amount of support from all the members of Troop 370, but specifically from Robert Sapienza, his Scout Master, and Bill Watts and Burt Vandeweerdt, two of his Assistant Scout Masters.

Mario lives in Sandy Hook with his parents and younger brother Timo, a sophomore at Newtown High School who is also working toward his Eagle Scout rank.

Mario is a senior and will begin attending Drexel University in Philadelphia this fall, working in a six-year doctor of physical therapy program. This summer, he will be working for Middlebury Racket Club, teaching tennis camps.
